4.2 Quality and importance

„Kiemelt fontossg cl a kvetkezo fajok kedvezo termszetvdelmi helyzetnek fenntartsa, helyrelltsa: Fajok:Aythya nyroca, Nycticorax nycticorax, Egretta alba, Egretta garzetta, Ardea purpurea, Ardeola ralloides, Ciconia nigra, Haliaetus albicilla, Aquila heliaca, Crex crex, Chlidonias niger, Chlidonias hybridus. The site consists of three sub-units, the avifaunas of which are in organic contact with each other, especially as regards wetland habitats: (1) Bodrogzug: The largest flood plain in the Hungarian section of the river Bodrog, preserving original conditions; hygrophilic habitats (oxbows, fen meadows, marshes) are abundant in the area. The protected parts are a Ramsar site. (2) Taktakz: The area between the Takta and Tisza rivers has assets similar to those of the Bodrogzug, but the hygrophilic habitats are more fragmented and are surrounded by extensive plough-lands. (3) Kopasz-hegy (Kopasz Hill) near Tokaj: As an isolated hill, it is characterized by a richness in species, sub-Mediterranean and continental, and by extensive steppe woodlands and thickets. There are considerable remnants of continental loess wall vegetation. Main ornithological assets of the site: - It includes habitats of birds preferring wet meadows, marshes, and riparian woodlands; - The largest population of Corncrake is found in the Bodrogzug area; - It has significant heron and tern colonies; - The flood plains are important feeding grounds for some birds nesting in the Zempln Mountains (black stork, lesser spotted eagle etc.); - The Kopasz-hegy is characterised by bird communities preferring xerotherm habitats, with several valuable species among them (Short-toed eagle, woodpeckers, shrikes); - The site is an important migration route (crane, black stork, Anatidae).
