4.2 Quality and importance

„Kiemelt fontossg cl a kvetkezo fajok kedvezo termszetvdelmi helyzetnek fenntartsa, helyrelltsa: Fajok: Ciconia nigra, Pernis apivorus, Circaetus gallicus, Aquila pomarina, Aquila heliaca, Aqula chrysaetos, Crex crex, Strix uralensis, Picus canus, Dendrocopos leucotos, Dendrocopos medius. The Zemplni-hegysg (Zempln Mountains), together with the Szerencsi-dombsg (Szerencs Hills) are one of the most important habitats for large birds of prey. The extensive forests provide suitable nesting places and the pastures, grasslands and cultivated areas of the fringes and the foothills provide an excellent feeding ground for them. In Hungary, one of the largest populations of the imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) is found here, and the largest breeding population of the lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina). Only here in Hungary breeds the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and the black stork (Ciconia nigra) also has a significant breeding population. Of the forest species, a large part of the Hungarian population of the Ural owl (Strix uralensis) breeds in the Zempln forests, along with, for instance, a considerable part of the Hungarian population of the white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos). The Hernd-vlgy (Hernd Valley) is partly the habitat and feeding ground of the protected imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) and partly the feeding ground of some other large birds of prey and is also an important migration route.
