This diversity has several reasons: (1) Diverse base rocks, favourable for both calcareous and calciphobic species. Mostly of Triassic limestone (with a little dolomite inset), which gives way in the west to slate shale. On the mountain fringes rhyolite tuff also occurs. (2) Peripheral position. Its contact with Bkkalja (Lower Bkk) favours the occurrence of lowland and colline species (steppe woodland species, Phlomis tuberosa, Amygdalus nana) and the great number of southern slopes is favourable for the occurrence of species-rich thermophilous associations. (3) Diverse geomorphology, including the steep gully of Hr-vlgy. One of the deepest and steepest valleys of Dli-Bkk, hosting diverse rock and ravine woodland associations. It shelters several montane flora and fauna elements (Scopolia carniolica, Phyllitis scolopendrium, Aconitum moldavicum, Lunaria rediviva and Pieris bryoniae, Clusillidae snails.) The limestone areas of southern exposure are home to fine populations of rock grasslands and Pannonic steppe grasslands, which in most cases are in contact with open oak woodlands, scrub woodlands and deciduous steppe thickets. These habitats sustain a very large number of protected plant and animal species. Among the zonal forest associations, there are extensive turkey oak - sessile oak forests and oak - hornbeam forests, while in the higher regions, in the valley bottoms we find sub-montane beech woodlands that are under forestry management. On slate shale surfaces there are smaller patches of calciphobic forests with acid vegetation (Vaccinium myrtillus, Luzula luzuloides, Avena flexuosa, Lycopodium clavatum). In the eastern area of the site, the sides of Tamsszki-vlgy (Tamsszki Valley) have a peculiar dolomite vegetation. A valuable forest association here is the Cirsio pannonici-Quercetum oak forest, rich in orchids (15 species!) and having a completely closed and very species-rich undergrowth, dominated by Brachypodium pinnatum. The hygrophilous vegetation of the valleys is represented partly by riverine ash-alder woodlands and south of Rpshuta on the cleared valley bottom there are tall sedge and tussock sedge fen meadows with smaller Nardus swards.
