Other Site Characteristics

A 40 km long site comprising Srvz vlgye (the valley of River Srvz) in the middle of the region of Mezofld, stretching between the settlements of Tc and Sregres. East of the site runs main road 63. Srvz vlgye evolved in the Pleistocene in a depressed area that developed along north-south, northwest-southeast directed fault line. As a result of tectonic movements and erosion, today it holds a significant proportion of the catchment area of Transdanubia and has transformed into an erosive-terraced valley. The broad alluvium of the valley formerly was a marsh, whose final draining was carried out between the years 1821 and 1926. The spread water of the old Srvz River is collected by two canals: Ndor-csatorna (Ndor Canal) on the eastern side of the valley and Malom-csatorna (Malom Canal) on the western side. In areas of lower terrains, smaller or larger, temporary or permanent lakes developed from the Srvz, and were often drained. From the botanical aspect, the area belongs to the Alfld (Great Hungarian Plain). Srvz vlgye plays a very important role as an ecological corridor: it connects the River Duna with the Dunntli-hwgag (Transdanubian Mountains). The fishponds and natural wetlands with the area of 2000 ha are essential for the birdlife of the region.
