Other Site Characteristics

An area of key importance of the site is the artificial lake, which has been almost completely surrounded by the town of Tata by now. The lake, which was created in the Middle Ages as a result of the damming of the ltal-r is characterized by continuous surface. Reed can be found only in some smaller patches at the edge of the lake. The area is completed by ploughlands, which are regularly used by migrating and wintering geese for feeding. Ferencmajor fish ponds is a former fen area, now the largest continuous fish pond system of North-Transdanubia. Due to the extensive agricultural use of the region, the 'stop oversight' attitude of shorebirds and geese gradually moved towards staying and nesting in the area as well as wintering.

The high number of wintering geese (in the order of 10000, with peaks of 30000-40000), ducks and seagulls (in the order of 1000) characterizes this Ramsar site. Ferencmajor fish ponds serves as an excellent substitute for birds instead of the Tatai reg-t part, which is a more disturbed area.
