Other Site Characteristics

The western basin of Velencei-t (Lake Velencei) and Dinnysi-ferto (Dinnysi Marsh). The latter, situated northwest of the lake, was formerly in close connection with Velencei-t, and the fishpond system of the area. The development of the basin of the lake took place in the boreal warm period of the Holocene when the area sank along two fault lines at right angles to each other. Following this period, the water level of the lake decreased heavily and sediment deposit processes began, which lasted until the beginning of the 20th century. As a result of this, the bed of the Ndas-t (Ndas Lake) became marshy which prevented the floods of Velencei-t from free draining. The railway line constructed in the 19th century connecting the settlements of Szkesfehrvr and Budapest, together with the later built public road separated the formerly continuous Ndas-t and Velencei-t. Within the frame of water regulation works, the water-courses were canalised and the water level of the Velencei-t was influenced by locks. Velencei-t was explored by tourism in the middle of the 20th century. To fulfil the requirements of tourism, the reedbed areas along the lake were eliminated and the shore area was filled and built in. At present, natural state is characteristic only of the western basin of the lake. In the area of the Dinnysi-ferto, the elimination of the marsh was attempted several times but in spite of the effect of draining canals, numerous factors helped to avoid the total, long-term drying out of the region (characteristics of the soil, minimal inclination, etc.). The primarily important natural asset of the area is the breeding and feeding bird fauna. Apart from this, plant communities (especially alkaline plains and floating mat of Sphagnum sp.) represent a unique value. The alkaline plains of Dinnys are among the most intact ones of Transdanubia.
