Other Site Characteristics

Loess valley systems developed in the northeast region of the plain of Mezofld, from the geological aspect belonging to the loess ridges of the Mezofld. In the Pannonic Age, thick marine sediment (sandy, clayey, marly) was deposited and dryed out with the retreat of the sea. In the Lower Pleistocene, as a result of tectonical movements the united table land was divided in the north-south, northwest-southeast direction and was lifted slightly. The dry surfaces provided excellent conditions for the development of loess, most intensively in the Upper Pleistocene. As for the geomorphology of the region, it is characterized by the parallel stream valleys cut into the plain terrain in the northwest-southeast direction. As a result of the constant vertical movement, the sides of these valleys were divided into characteristic ridges and steps. From the botanical aspect, the region belongs to the Alfld (Great Hungarian Plain). In the evolution of the flora of the area loess played an essential role. The predominant potential habitat of Mezofld is Aceri tatarico-Quercetum and in a smaller proportion loess grasslands as well as steppe woodlands.

The remnants of former extensive loess vegetation and loess grasslands are present in the area.
