Other Site Characteristics

This site is located in the south-western foreground of the Budai-hegysg (Budai Mountains), between the settlements of Biatorbgy and Budafok (Budapest, XXII. district), with an orientation of northwest-east. A rapidly developing part of the agglomeration area of Budapest: it is divided as well as bordered by railway lines with heavy traffic, highways, public roads and the commercial-servicing areas settled down near them. The former military areas in this region are under privatisation: presumably, these will turn into housing estates as well. The limestone plateau of 150-330 m height, made up of young sediment layers (Lajta, Sarmata, at the edges Pannonic and Pleistocene) is dissected by more loess valleys. The highest part of the site, the Biai-hegyek (Biai Mountains) is an area of low mountainous character: it is covered by forests and has significant broken off rock walls. Despite the presence of the mass of limestone, karst formations cannot be observed, but there are numerous quarries present of different sizes. Some parts of the plateau are covered by a thin loess layer. As a result of this phenomenon and also because of the limestone is breaking up into sand, these habitats can be characterised by a special mixture of species of mountainous areas of medium height and species of the plains. The site has six area units, which are located mosaic-like.

The Carpathian Basin is poor in such habitats and these are near the agglomeration area of Budapest and are threatened with devastation.
