Large (in continental scale, except of the SE corner of Europaean Russia, the largest), dominantly treeless salt steppe expanse where salt and sodic marshes and ponds scattered in the bottoms. The driest communities are loess steppic grasslands. The different groundwater conditions result mosaic-like structure of the above mentioned habitats. As all Hungarian salt areas, Hortobgy is also an almost flat territory. The climate of forest-steppe type but despite of this fact, most of the area is originally tree-poor or treeless (for tens of thousands of years) because of the special geological and soil conditions. In the last 3-4 thousand years the waves of nomadic and semi-nomadic cultures also influenced the remnant trees and forests. From the Middle Ages the traditional Hungarian usage of the area was again semi-nomadic. Number of villages and smaller localities (human population density) remained allways low (the recent situation is almost absence of population in most part of region). Significant part of the site is riverine area at Tisza river, with a native-like, big reservoire, gallery forests, flooding areas. The area is mentioned sometimes as the "best" Hungarian IBA site. Wetland International lists as key site for such kind of Annex I. species like Anser erythropus and Aythya nyroca. 17 globally threatened species occur in the region (source: BirdLife International). Some species with largest Hungarian breeding or staging population like Anser erythropus, Grus grus, Charadrius morinellus, Falco vespertinus, Platalea leucorodia etc. Gobally, the most important values of the site are the big size of undisturbed or less-disturbed salt steppe and salt marshes and their famous avifauna.
