Other Site Characteristics

The site consists of large salt grasslands with marshlands surrounded by arable lands. The notable saline lake, called Kardoskti Fehrt- situated in the northern part of the area - is a Ramsar site. The lake evolved in one of the ancient alluvial riverbeds of the river Maros. The lakebed is usually covered with water only in early spring and late autumn.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is extremly important during the migration, thousands of waterfowl, especially cranes and shorebirds use the lake as a resting place, while in the daytime the flocks of birds disperse in the other parts of the site, using grasslands and arable lands for feeding. The northern and southern part of the site connects closely and provide suitable conditions for the above mentioned species. At the southern grasslands a small, but permanent population of Great Bustard lives.
