Other Site Characteristics

This southern part of Hungary is a mildly undulating loess plain containing wet local depressions. The majority of loess steppes have been ploughed up many decades ago, but the site contains some valuable remnants; less degraded ones are found on steep slopes of loess walls. The ground water usually has high salt content in this region with the dominance of Na(Mg,Ca)HCO3, which promotes sodification in local depressions and development of salt marshes and grasslands. "Other land" types are: minor roads, canals.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site has high importance because it contains the most valuable loess steppe remnants of the Southern Bcska loess region of the Great Hungarian Plain. It has medium quality, first of all because of habitat fragmentation and intensive edge-effects. Salt habitats are in better state, loessy grasslands are usually more degraded.
