Other Site Characteristics

The site is located on a former open floodplain of the River Danube. Water supply of the site is of precipitation and ground water origin, characterised by seasonality and depending upon the rainfall of the given year. The site contains alkaline habitats on mainly alkaline soils due to the calciferous sediments of River Danube, deposited here. As a consequence of water regulations the ground water level is dropping, resulting in the expansion of steppic habitats. Water dependent habitats and their species remained in fragments only, while those of Artemisia dominate grasslands in a large coverage and number.

4.2 Quality and importance

There are good quality Artemisia grasslands within the site, on the other hand its wetlands are fragmented. The site is one of the largest patches of alkaline grasslands in the Danube Valley, with a big population of Dorcadion fulvum cervae.
