Other Site Characteristics

The site consists of wetlands and - for the lesser part - dry sand grassland habitats on higher elevations. Most of the natural habitats are treeless. The site is characterised by high biodiversity both on species and habitat level. Unfortunately it was exposed to intensive drainage, and until recently this was one of the most serious damaging effects (however its intensity has decreased). Its most important wetland habitats are: tussock and non-tussock sedge communities, reedbeds, alluvial meadows, Molinia meadows, euhydrophyte habitats, willows and - in lesser extension - an alder bog wood. Artificial woodlands largely consist of Robinia pseudo-acacia and Populus x euramericana. "Other land" types are mainly small farms, canals, motor roads, railway and agricultural buildings.

4.2 Quality and importance

It has great importance and in general good quality. It is one of the most important wetlands in the Great Hungarian Plain. It is part of an important ecological corridor consisting of wetlands and passing from north to south across the Carpathian basin. It still has a lot of habitats of good quality, however in the past decades it has become significantly drier owing to intensive drainage, and the expansion of degraded habitats increases year by year. Burning, overgrazing, not appropriate mowing practices and improving or ploughing of grasslands are also serious damaging factors. It has a lot of plant and animal species protected by national law.
