Other Site Characteristics

Most of its natural habitats are treeless. The site has two main habitat-groups: dry sandy habitats such as pannonic sand steppes and pannonic sand dune thickets, while on lower level wetland habitats such as different kinds of marshes, Molinia meadows and alluvial meadows occur. It is characterised by high biodiversity both on species and habitat level, though now it is not in optimal natural state because it was exposed to intensive degrading effects: a great part of the sand dune thickets burnt down in 2000, certain parts of the sand steppe are overgrazed, while in latest decades wetlands have become much dryer owing to canalization. Artificial forest cultures mainly consist of Pinus nigra, Pinus sylvestris, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Populus x euramericana. Mixed woodland means pannonic inland sand dune thicket (91N0). Non-forest areas cultivated with woody plants are vineyards and orchards. "Other land" categories are mainly: small farms, wastes, minor roads, canals and nearly monodominant vegetation patches of invasive adventive plants such as Ailanthus altissima, Asclepias syriaca.

4.2 Quality and importance

Kiemelt fontossg cl a kvetkezo fajok/lohelyek kedvezo termszetvdelmi helyzetnek helyrelltsa: 6260 (pannon homoki gyepek), 6410 (kkperjs rtek), 6440 (mocsrrtek), 91N0 (pannon borks-nyrasok), Lycaena dispar (nagy tuzlepke), Maculinea teleius (vrfu-boglrkalepke), Misgurnus fossilis (rti csk). It has great importance because of its high biodiversity (both on species and habitat level). Well represents dry sand habitats and wetlands of the region between the rivers Danube and Tisza, on the Great Hungarian Plain. Now it has medium quality, because a large part of the sand dune thickets has been burnt down in 2000, certain parts of the sand steppe are overgrazed, while in latest decades wetlands have become much dryer due to canalization. Inappropriate mowing practices also occur. It has a lot of animal and plant species protected by national law.
