Other Site Characteristics

The site consists of largely treeless salt (sodic) plains developed in wind-formed depressions. All kind of salt habitat types characteristic of the Great Hungarian Plain can be found here. So-called "szoloncsk" and "szoloncsk-szolonyec" type of these sodic habitats and alkaline soils are similar to those of the Danube Valley (with dominant salt accumulation level on or close to the soil surface), but they differ from the famous sodic lands of Hortobgy. (In the latter region salt accumulation level is more distant from the soil surface, and there are also differences in chemical composition of soils.) "Other land" types are mainly channels and minor roads.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site has great importance, its wetlands belong to the most important salt areas in the eastern part of the area between the Danube and Tisza rivers in the Great Hungarian Plain. Mainly it has good quality because salt habitats are highly resistant to physical disturbances, however overgrazing and overmowing can cause nature conservation problems. Nevertheless the most threatening influences and activities are not these but the drainage and ploughing of grasslands.
