Other Site Characteristics

The Ablnc Valley covers an about 25-km-long heterogeneous natural area in the northern part of Vas County, touching the Koszeg-hegyalja and the Vas Plains, on the margin of the Alpokalja flora region. The Ablnc Brook has its source in two springs in the Als Forest at Koszeg-hegyalja and after a rather long and twisting way flows into the Rpce River over the village of Gr. This brook is uncontrolled in almost its full length, only the discharge area was driven into a new bed. Its water is fed by several small springs, temporary streams as well as the Fenyves Brook that springs from the Csepreg Forest. Potential vegetation is mostly hornbeam-chestnut oak forest, while in smaller part calcifugous oak forests, turkey oak - sessile oak can also be found. The original place of hornbeam and oak woodland were mostly planted with spruce (Picea), fir (Pinus) and pseudoacacia. Nevertheless, the flora and fauna of the Ablnc-Valley is still diversified and worth for protection.

It is especially significant the community of birds and xylophage insects within the old blocks. The lingy areas found on the open clearings of Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum forests are the consequence of the old forestry. The meadows and fens along the Ablnc Brook preserve cold-preferring plant species (Carex appropinquata, Trollius europaeus). Dry grassy areas in small gardens in the valley slopes are also providing shelter to valuable plant species (Pulsatilla nigricans, Iris variegata). A relatively long section of the Ablnc Brook does not flow through the village therefore its water is clear enough thus having a rich aquatic insect fauna. Ponds and abandoned mine pits provide an excellent breeding place for the amphibians. The population of Triturus dobrogicus is especially important in this area.
